"Pearl Jams!"

Songs and music have the power to turn back time, to take you to places of your youth. Memories are jogged and the aches and pains fade for a bit. Me and my dog were wandering thru the park, when I heard Alice Cooper blasting out "Eighteen" on a stereo down the street. I was 18 when that was first played and it was strange how the song triggered memories of old times. It got me to thinking about the power of songs and inspired this carving of Pearl. I was at a reception and the opening notes of "Honky Tonk Women" electrified the crowd. I'm a watcher, not a dancer, but I enjoyed watching the crowd having fun. An older lady, 70's-80's maybe, was enjoying the song so much, that she slowly stood up, grabbed her daughter's husband, and drug him to the dance floor! So, I tried to capture that spirit, that energy in this old lady with her ear buds, playing a little air guitar and kicking up her heels. "...Gimme....Gimme....Gimme...the honky tonk blues!"

Waiting on wood

Waiting on wood! So this is the sculpey model for a new Santa of mine. I have a 4x8 foot square rack over 10 foot tall storing my wood in the garage. But with all the wood I have, I didn't have the right size needed for this little guy. So I ordered some fine Wisconsin basswood from Heinecke that should arrive this week. I've got a few carvings boxed up to send to the CCA competition up in Indiana, but I don't think I'll have this guy finished. We'll see. I'll work on a roughout I got from Mitch Cartledge a couple of years ago. Thanks for looking! Be sure to look for me on facebook or my website mikepounders.weebly.com

Egg Head

I'm undecided whether this is an elf or a gnome, but he is definitely not a Santa! I was trying to give Mark Akers the last bit of my cash, and I saw a little carving similar to this, sitting on the table at his booth. I think Mark said he had been messing around with it at carving club or a show or something, so he didn't have any roughouts or pictures or anything. But he did have a large basswood egg, so of course I bought it! I took a few pictures of his, so I wouldn't forget why I bought it, and now, months later, I finally got started on it. This is the large, 5 inch size egg, and it was nice to carve something a little larger than what I've been working on. Thanks for looking!

Elf

This is a Gary Falin roughout that I saw at the Renegade Roundup last March. I've carved a few original designs the past year, but I think I've learned a few things by carving the designs of others, even though I end up "improving" them. Gary's work has a lot of intricacies and it is quite educational doing his roughouts. I'm really looking forward to the next one! Merry Christmas to all!

More Ornaments

Whew! I am about carved out for Christmas! I did manage to get a few more Santa ornaments completed, but these may be the last holiday things I do for a bit, since I'm not sure I could finish and sell soething before next week. I'll stick these in my store at http://mikepounders.weebly.com and may take them to a Christmas party at work this week and see if I can sell a few more things. Not sure when the cutoff would be for shipping to someone for Christmas, but it is probably soon! Thanks for looking. These are around 3 inches tall and about an inch wide.
